Fargo was the 1996 Coen Brothers film, starred Billy Bob Thornton (as Molly Solverson), Martin Freeman (as Bob Odenkirk) and Bob Odenkirk. Tolman's performance as Minnesota cop Molly Solverson was praised by Vanity Fair, who wrote: "She calmly and confidently took over the entire performance". For her role, she received the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Film/Miniseries, and received Best Actress nominations at the Emmy Awards and for the Golden Globes. The same year, it was revealed that Tolman will make an appearance on the Mindy project in the role of Abby Berman who is a romance writer. Tolman was the support character in Michael Douglas' horror comedy film Krampus. In the wake of her breakout performance in Fargo, Tolman declined several part-time roles, including mothers wives, best friends and mothers in search of an unusual character. In 2017, Tolman starred in ABC's Downward Dog, based on the Animal Media Group web series that was cancelled after one season. Tolman appeared in ABC's Emergence drama, which debuted on the 24th of September, 2019, however it was canceled by ABC within a year, at the 21st of May in 2020 despite Tolman posting on Twitter that the show's ratings were "pretty good". Natalie Green was the lead character in her role in the Facts of Life segment of Live In front of a Studio Audience's 3rd season.
